Merry Christmas to all

Having recently wet my waders in some famous NZ rivers like the Bullet and Mangles, I could start preaching to the unconfirmed that there is nothing more exciting than new waters in a different country.

But I won't. Instead I'll simply repeat my old friend Jon Kleivstul's saying that the true feeling behind any sport like fishing or hunting, is simply a feeling for the love of the outdoors. Plus, some of the nicest waters are right here at home up at our club, n'est pas? A rendition of these feelings was expressed many years ago by a Jeff Chapleau, a member whose art graces various memorabilia around our club.
Below is his rendition in comedy art.

The winter and holiday season is upon us., skiers are waiting for the big snowfall... I am certain there are a few thoughts about the last day spent on a lake or river or, the next time we will enjoy a day dropping a fly line. In less than 5 months those  pristine cold lakes will be open again, and camaraderie of like minded individuals will be enjoy the AFGC. There are not many places that offer a 7 mile long, 300 foot deep mountain fed lake, with only non-stocked speckies like we have.

Bad news now. Due to age and maintenance as well as a shrunken budget, our wooden Vercheres boats now number 3 good and 2 in need of repair.

Therefore for 2012, the club cannot guarantee boats for everyone. We are actively looking for used 16 foot boats to purchase.  If you know of anyone with an aluminum boat, (short transom), please let me know.

For those of you with access to a boat (and suitable trailer for the road in), you may want to think about bringing it in. There is a good protected launch at the beach and our new docks will be installed in May. Trailers can be stored temporarily at the dam, or seasonally at the ZEC gate. Please contact me for more info.

Our small group has swollen ranks this past year to 21 members. Good on us! For certain there will be some grand competition this spring for bunks, if not for boats. Hence we also request that you plan your fishing party and weekends, then let our reservations chair know your plans ASAP. Groups are not necessarily guaranteed their first choice of cabins on a first come first served basis, but more by the size of your group. Camp's 1 and 2 sleep 8. Camp 3 sleeps 6, and camp 4 sleeps 4, mainly as an overload. (No fridge is available in camp 4 for the moment). You may get in touch with Derek via e-mail at
derek.a_butler@bell.net  (Please use a reservation form for this purpose indicating how many in your group.

Let me take this opportunity to welcome our new members for 2012 (not in any order).

Tony Fowler
Stan Roy
Rod Armstrong
Pierre Beaulne
Pierre Legault

If you have friends you think might like the place, ask us for an application form. New members need be recommended by a minimum two existing members, and will be approved by the executive at the annual AGM, or any interim meeting so called for this purpose.

Our executive for 2012 was voted in at the AGM in November, and is as follows:

President                                           Larry McGowan
Vice President                                  John Moore –
Treasurer                                          Alec Moore
Secretary                                          Harold Gill
Reservations Chair and Director,      Derek Butler
Director                                             Stan Roy

Note: One director chair was left vacant for the time being.

We encourage members to be active participants in club business albeit communicating with each other, grouping yourselves into fishing or work parties or simply letting us know via this blog or other ways your thoughts and/or plans.

As you can readily envision the low annual fees will be maintained by a willing membership doing small projects on a regular basis.  We welcome feedback. So let us know how you thought your visit was to the club, or what the executive might target to allow you to enjoy the place more.

Kind regards

The Secretary
H Gill
